John G. Brock-Utne er en norskamerikaner og Professor Emeritus ved Stanford universitet i Stanford i Kalifornia. Sunniva Bratt er en kunstner og l rerinne i Fåvang, Norge. Ideen til denne boken kom til forfatteren og hans kone da de laget en lek for barnebarna og deres venner julaften i 2010. Leken begynte med en beskjed fra selveste julenissen at reinsdyret Rudolf hadde mistet bjellen sin. Barna ble fortalt at bjellen var magisk. Når den ikke var rundt halsen til Rudolf, ringte det i den. Vår eldste s nn, Jens, ringte en stor bjelle mens han l p rundt Stanford. Da det var m rkt ute fikk alle barna utlevert lykter. Minst 20 barn i alderen 3-12 år fulgte etter Jens og lyden. Bjellen fant de til slutt og utrolig nok mistet vi ingen barn den kvelden.
