You booked eleven months out. You read the etiquette guides and actually followed them. You ate at a place with six seats and no English menu, pointed at something, and it was wonderful. You saw Fushimi Inari at dawn and you beat the crowds.
It was one of the best trips of your life.
And then somewhere around day nine - probably on a train, probably watching a town go by that you would never stop in - you felt something you didn't have a word for.
Not disappointment. Closer to this: you had been shown Japan. Beautifully, professionally, and through glass.
You could see everything. You could not get in.
Almost every book will tell you the problem was that you didn't go deep enough - that the real Japan was hiding somewhere you failed to find. That explanation is flattering to whoever is selling it and useless to you.
Japan, Again argues something else entirely.
A first trip to Japan is a logistics problem, and you solved it. You came home knowing how an entire country operates - an asset nobody has ever priced for you, and one worth several days of unspent attention on your next trip.
Almost every returning traveler spends it on a heavier itinerary, and recreates the exact experience they were trying to escape.
This book is about spending it differently.

That is a real restriction, not a marketing pose. Every recommendation here assumes you already know how the trains work, what a convenience store is for, and what it feels like to stand in a country whose language you cannot read.
If you haven't gone yet - go. The standard first trip is a very good trip and you should have it, without anyone telling you the real Japan is somewhere else. Then come back.
For everyone else: the second trip is not more Japan. It's another Japan.
