Jungle Without Water and Other Stories is the debut collection of Malaysian-born, Australian-based writer Sreedhevi Iyer, gathering ten stories that move fluidly across Malaysia, Brisbane, and Melbourne, mapping the inner and outer lives of South and Southeast Asian characters in transit.
The stories range widely in setting and perspective. A young Sikh man newly arrived in Brisbane searches for a Gurdwara while fielding distressing calls from his mother in Jallandhar. A Tamil girl accompanies her father on an awkward stay with relatives in Brisbane, navigating the small humiliations and consolations of displacement. Other stories are set deep in the Chinese and Indian communities of postcolonial Malaysia - rubber estates, kopitiam coffee shops, night markets, and the lingering structures of colonial and ethnic hierarchy.
Throughout, Iyer draws on Tamil, Hindi, Malay, Cantonese, and Punjabi, grounding each story in the texture of multilingual, multicultural life. A glossary is included. The collection is notable for its range of voices - from children to elders, from new arrivals to long-settled communities - and for its ability to hold humour and heartbreak in the same breath.
Informed by Iyer's own experience of the South and Southeast Asian diaspora, and shaped by an MFA at the City University of Hong Kong, Jungle Without Water is a confident and quietly powerful debut, attentive to the resilience, comedy, and grief of lives lived between cultures.
