More than a political pamphlet, The Jewish State became the intellectual catalyst for modern political Zionism. Herzl's ideas led directly to the convening of the First Zionist Congress in 1897 and helped shape the movement that ultimately resulted in the creation of the State of Israel in 1948. Today the work remains an essential historical document for understanding the origins of modern Middle Eastern history and the development of Jewish nationalism.
