Study of a clan based Jetty Hokkien Chinese community that lives over the Inter-tidal zone. This work, based upon doctoral research for a dissertation in the early 1990s, represents a detailed multi-level description of a fairly unique community in the world-once far more common in Pre-Civil War China, now existing mainly in small localities of diaspora communities throughout Southeast Asia. Now a World Heritage site, the community has undergone significant change over the past 30 years, with a new generation of descendants still valuing the life-ways long established by the community.
