Starting a new school can feel scary-especially when everything else is new, too.
When Jane's dad gets a new job, her family moves to a new community over the summer. Jane misses her old home and friends, and as the first day at Hartman Elementary gets closer, her worries begin to grow.
What if nobody likes her?
What if she doesn't know what to do?
What if she's too nervous?
With encouragement from her dad, Jane learns a simple Calm Plan to help when anxious feelings appear. She practices taking slow breaths, thinking positive thoughts, and reminding herself that she can handle hard things.
Then something wonderful happens. At the community pool, Jane finds the courage to meet Mia and Sophie-and discovers that making new friends may not be as scary as she imagined.
When the big first day finally arrives, Jane still feels nervous. But with her Calm Plan, her new friends, and the warm welcome of Mrs. Carter, Jane discovers an important lesson:
You can feel nervous and still be brave.
