La scelta di occuparmi di improvvisazione è avvenuta senza nessun contrasto, né pentimento. La musica improvvisata, nelle sue forme più varie, soprattutto quella di ambito jazzistico, è stata parte integrante della mia vita: essa è stata il fulcro principale della mia crescita come uomo oltre che come musicista. La voglia dunque di analizzare e ampliare la diffusione di un argomento finora poco approfondito è il presupposto principale di questo libro.
Le finalità di questo lavoro sono due e consistono nel tentativo di dare un'illustrazione degli aspetti principali che riguardano il mondo dell'improvvisazione, uno è l'aspetto teorico e l'altro riguarda la prassi.
Ho deciso di partire dall'aspetto teorico che risulta indispensabile nel continuo della esposizione: ci permette, infatti, di avere finalmente un quadro chiaro di quello che, sia a livello etimologico che epistemologico, fino ad oggi è stato visto in maniera opaca o spesso non condivisa. Ciò avviene quasi esclusivamente grazie al lavoro illuminante di Vincenzo Caporaletti1, che nel suo I processi improvvisativi
della musica - Un approccio globale è riuscito a dare una revisione sistematica al sistema musicale sin dalle fondamenta, introducendo e chiarendo concetti, come quello di estemporizzazione che appare da subito centrale per l'evoluzione degli studi in materia e apre un nuovo universo di indagine che rende improvvisamente datata la bibliografia intorno all'argomento [Franco 2005, pag. 4].
Non si può, senza questa nuova definizione dei concetti d'improvvisazione ed estemporizzazione, andare a elencare quelle che nella storia sono state riconosciute come pratiche improvvisative; vedremo, infatti, come i processi audiotattili siano sempre stati presenti nella storia, dall'uomo primitivo fino alla musica contemporanea.
Vedremo poi nello specifico, attraverso alcuni esempi particolarmente importanti, come tutto ciò abbia influito sulla prassi di alcuni artisti che, pioneristicamente, hanno portato avanti queste forme di linguaggio musicale. Mi soffermerò soprattutto sulle avanguardie romane del quindicennio che va dalla metà degli anni sessanta a tutti gli anni settanta. Realtà che per una serie di cause, ha occupato un posto importante nel panorama europeo soprattutto dal punto di vista delle innovazioni nel linguaggio musicale.

Partendo poi da queste esperienze romane vedremo come la prassi improvvisativa, oltre a divenire parte centrale del modus operandi mi molti musicisti/compositori, diventi un formidabile strumento pedagogico musicale ma non solo. Da quelle esperienze prenderà vita la realtà delle scuole di musica popolare.
