Idomenée is a tragic opera (tragédie en musique) in five acts and a prologue by André Campra, with a libretto by Antoine Danchet. It was first performed at the Académie Royale de Musique (Paris Opera) on 15 January 1712. Based on the story of Idomeneus, King of Crete, the opera blends elements of classical mythology and courtly drama.
Danchet's libretto draws on the themes of duty, love, and sacrifice, exploring the moral dilemmas faced by Idoménée as he struggles to fulfill a vow made to Neptune. Campra's score is notable for its expressive use of melody and orchestration, capturing the emotional intensity of the drama and solidifying his reputation as a leading composer of French opera.
This edition offers readers a chance to rediscover a significant work from the French Baroque, showcasing the enduring appeal of classical themes and the richness of early 18th-century French musical theater.
