Nel dicembre del 1945 un contadino che scavava in cerca di concime vicino al villaggio egiziano di Nag Hammadi urtò una giara di argilla sigillata. Conteneva tredici codici rilegati in cuoio, nascosti nella rupe fin dal quarto secolo. Uno di essi era un vangelo cristiano che nessun uomo vivente aveva mai letto.
Parla di ciò su cui il Nuovo Testamento tace.
Il Vangelo di Filippo non è un racconto di miracoli e di viaggi. È una raccolta di detti, immagini e brevi meditazioni, scritta da cristiani convinti che le verità più profonde della loro fede non fossero mai state destinate a essere predicate in pubblico. Scrissero dell'unione del maschile e del femminile come di una realtà spirituale. Scrissero di un rito che chiamavano la camera nuziale e che ritenevano il più alto di tutti i sacramenti. E scrissero di una donna, Maria Maddalena, che chiamavano la compagna del Salvatore, colei che egli amava più degli altri discepoli.
Non sono invenzioni moderne. Stanno sulla pagina, in un manoscritto più antico della maggior parte delle bibbie stampate oggi.
Che cosa distingue questa edizioneLa maggior parte delle versioni di questo vangelo è costituita o da traduzioni accademiche destinate agli specialisti, diffuse e irte di integrazioni tra parentesi quadre, oppure da parafrasi libere che aggiungono in silenzio ciò che il manoscritto non ha mai contenuto. Questa edizione segue una terza via. Il testo copto giunto fino a noi è reso in un italiano moderno, naturale e chiaro, senza aggiunte e senza smussature. Dove la pagina antica è danneggiata e mancano parole, la lacuna viene segnalata onestamente invece di essere colmata con congetture.
Ogni detto è seguito da un commento in lingua semplice, che risponde alla domanda che un lettore non specialista si pone davvero. Che cosa significa questo passo. Perché è stato formulato così. Che cosa credevano coloro che lo lessero per primi.
