Partecipare alla realizzazione di questo volume ha significato assumere una responsabilità complessa e affascinante: non soltanto raccogliere date, nomi, atti e testimonianze, ma trasformare un vastissimo patrimonio documentale in una narrazione storica ordinata, leggibile e coerente.
Come scrittore, giornalista e autore di numerose opere storiche, ho sempre ritenuto che la storia non possa ridursi a una fredda successione di avvenimenti. Essa vive realmente quando il lettore riesce a comprendere le scelte degli uomini, le loro speranze, le sconfitte, le fratture istituzionali e la forza delle idee capaci di attraversare i secoli.
La storia degli Ordini giovanniti è particolarmente articolata. Dopo la perdita di Malta, le obbedienze si divisero, le tradizioni si moltiplicarono e le linee russe assunsero un ruolo determinante. In tale contesto, il compito dello storico non è semplificare artificiosamente, ma distinguere il fatto documentato dalla testimonianza, l'atto pubblico dalla tradizione e la ricostruzione giuridica dalla memoria istituzionale.
Il mio contributo si è concentrato soprattutto sulla costruzione del racconto storico, sul collegamento tra le diverse epoche e sulla ricerca di un linguaggio capace di unire rigore e leggibilità . Ho cercato di accompagnare il lettore dalle origini dell'Hospitale alla sovranità di Rodi e Malta, dalla crisi napoleonica alla svolta russa, fino alle figure di Paolo I, Alessandro I e Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen.
La vicenda di Bellingshausen e dei Cavalieri di Ghiaccio costituisce una delle parti più originali dell'opera: la storia europea incontra l'Antartide, la tradizione cavalleresca si lega alle esplorazioni e la memoria istituzionale assume una dimensione epica, sempre sostenuta dal riferimento a documenti, testimonianze, fonti pubblicate e archivi.
Il libro offre una visione complessiva, mostra la costruzione di una storia unitaria, non riproducendo gli atti disponibili, dei quali molti sono già pubblicati, nei siti ufficiali e negli archivi del Sovrano Ordine.
Particolare attenzione è stata dedicata alle differenti caratteristiche dei capitoli: spiritualità nelle origini ospitaliere, tensione politica e giuridica nella crisi di Malta, solennità nella Russia imperiale, avventura nelle esplorazioni antartiche, precisione nelle questioni dinastiche e magistrali. Malta 2009 e Rodi 2012 rappresentano il punto d'incontro tra documentazione contemporanea, testimonianza diretta e ricomposizione istituzionale.
Il libro nasce dall'incontro tra la voce del Gran Maestro, testimone di molti eventi contemporanei, e quella dello scrittore e giornalista. Ne deriva un'opera in cui testimonianza e narrazione, memoria e analisi, esperienza vissuta e ricostruzione storica procedono insieme.
Il filo conduttore dell'intero volume è il servizio. L'Ordine nasce per assistere, curare e proteggere; ogni successiva forma militare, diplomatica, territoriale o magistrale acquista significato soltanto se rimane fedele a questa origine.
Il millennio non deve quindi essere soltanto celebrato, ma trasformarsi in impegno, disciplina, responsabilità e rinnovamento. Il nuovo corso del 2026 rappresenta la volontà di rendere più seria, chiara e consapevole l'appartenenza all'Ordine.
Questo libro non pretende di essere definitivo: ogni nuovo documento amplia o correggere la ricerca; ma vuole costituire un punto fermo, la base ordinata per ulteriori studi, un deposito di memoria, una dichiarazione d'identità e una guida per il futuro.
Affido dunque queste pagine al lettore, invitandolo a percorrere la lunga strada che unisce Gerusalemme, Malta, San Pietroburgo, i mari e i ghiacci dell'Antartide, fino alla contemporanea World Confederation: una storia complessa e talvolta controversa, ma proprio per questo degna di essere raccontata.
