La Secchia Rapita (The Stolen Bucket) is a mock-heroic epic poem by Alessandro Tassoni, first published in 1622. This edition presents Tassoni's masterpiece alongside L'oceano, offering readers a comprehensive look at the author's works. Known for its wit, satire, and burlesque style, La Secchia Rapita recounts the war between Modena and Bologna, sparked by the theft of a bucket. Tassoni's poem blends historical events with imaginative embellishments, creating a vibrant and entertaining narrative that mocks the conventions of traditional epic poetry.
This edition includes detailed notes, enhancing the reader's understanding and appreciation of Tassoni's linguistic artistry and the historical context of the poem. A cornerstone of Italian literature, La Secchia Rapita remains a relevant and engaging work, offering insights into the cultural and political landscape of 17th-century Italy. Its enduring appeal lies in its innovative approach to epic form and its clever social commentary.
