Quando un sistema totalitario comincia davvero a prendere forma?
Questo libro nasce da questa domanda. Ho visto parole che dovrebbero restare limpide - uguaglianza, diritti, protezione - inclinarsi lentamente in un'unica direzione, restringendo lo spazio in cui è ancora possibile parlare e pensare. Mentre la maggior parte delle persone viveva senza sospettare nulla, una parte della libertà si ritirava, con passi piccoli e continui. Promesse fatte in nome della sicurezza e dell'equità diventavano norme che riducevano le domande e disciplinavano il linguaggio.
La perdita della libertà non arriva mai come un colpo improvviso.
Segue invece un percorso riconoscibile. All'alba, nelle ore meno osservate, il sistema giuridico mostra le sue crepe. La responsabilità si sposta, senza più un punto fermo. Il potere diventa severo verso l'interno e accomodante verso l'esterno. Le persone vengono registrate come dati, ridotte a ciò che può essere classificato. Anche il luogo in cui vivo non ha evitato questo scivolamento.
Un giovane di intelligenza straordinaria ha lasciato il suo paese prima degli altri: aveva percepito un cambiamento che molti ignoravano. Un governo ha iniziato a rivolgere i propri strumenti di controllo contro coloro che avrebbe dovuto servire, cercando altrove il proprio consenso. Alcune vite sono state trasformate in simboli, altre archiviate nelle statistiche. Piccole scene quotidiane - un gesto involontario, un'abitudine che cambia, un principio che scompare senza rumore - rivelavano più di qualsiasi dichiarazione ufficiale. Quando i numeri sostituiscono i fatti, le persone accettano ciò che viene loro consegnato e smettono di chiedere perché. È in questa sospensione che l'autorità trova il suo spazio.
Mi trovo qui per aver tentato di difendere la mia libertà . Oggi la linea di divisione non passa più tra destra e sinistra, ma tra l'individuo e le forme di potere - collettivo o statale - che cercano di assorbirlo. Ho visto il linguaggio morale diventare strumento di controllo. Ho visto gruppi che trasformavano la benevolenza dichiarata in vantaggio, consumando lentamente la capacità di empatia attorno a loro. Ho dovuto esaminare la mia rabbia per conservare quanto restava del mio giudizio. Altri paesi avevano già mostrato come norme nate in nome dell'equità possano irrigidirsi in dottrine che non permettono deviazioni.
Non ho mai desiderato intervenire nella vita altrui.
Sono stati gli altri a entrare nel mio spazio. Riconoscere l'esistenza di un altro è un gesto semplice; imporre una convinzione è tutt'altra cosa. Se esiste la libertà di credere nell'uguaglianza, deve esistere anche la libertà di interrogarla. Non pretendo di essere virtuoso. Ma la pressione sulla mente è diventata insostenibile. In alcuni giorni ho smesso di scrivere perché le frasi non mi appartenevano più. Ogni conflitto con il mondo comincia da un conflitto con se stessi.
L'alba non segnava più un nuovo giorno.
Era il momento in cui parole rassicuranti coprivano tutto e in cui regole invisibili lasciavano i segni più profondi. Il controllo non arriva nel frastuono; cresce in ciò che quasi nessuno guarda.
