I mirabili istinti mercè cui gli animali provvedono alle necessità della loro esistenza e di quella della lor prole, i costumi loro differentissimi, nei quali si estrinseca il principio immateriale ed intelligente della vita animale, porsero argomento a bellissimi studi e ricerche onde s'illustrarono Réaumur, Buffon, Huber, Dzierzon e moltissimi altri che non occorre enumerare. Il complesso ordinato delle nozioni che derivano da simili studi e ricerche, costituisce a mio parere, un ramo di scienza a parte, abbastanza ben circoscritto ed importantissimo, che io denominerei biologia o più propriamente etologia.
