Scrive E. Benveniste, linguista tra i sommi, che il linguaggio ri-produce la realtà . Il che è da intendere nel modo più letterale: la realtà è prodotta di nuovo per il tramite del linguaggio. Il parlante, con suo discorso, fa rinascere l'evento e la propria esperienza dell'evento. Colui che ascolta coglie anzitutto il discorso e attraverso questo discorso, l'evento riprodotto. In tal modo la situazione inerente la pratica del linguaggio che è quella dello scambio e del dialogo, conferisce all'atto del discorso una duplice funzione: per il parlante rappresenta la realtà ; per l'ascoltatore, ri-crea questa realtà .
Naturalmente la presente - assai modesta - silloge non si pone e nemmeno pretende di farlo, ai livelli stratosferici appena menzionati; si accontenta di esemplificare, dall'uso quotidiano del linguaggio, qualche modo di dire, tentando di dare spicco al genere, alla forma di rappresentazione ‒ a tratti buffa, altre volte contraddittoria ‒ che ne deriva.
