Il libro procede per parti del corpo - i capelli, lo sguardo, la bocca, il collo, la nuca, le spalle, le mani, il seno, il punto vita, il ventre, i fianchi, le gambe, il piede, il pube - non per frammentare la donna, ma per concentrare lo sguardo, come si fa con una lente, su un punto preciso da cui osservare un intero sistema simbolico. Ogni capitolo è una porta. Dietro ciascuna si trova la storia di come il potere - religioso, sociale, sessuale, politico - abbia scelto il corpo femminile come superficie su cui scrivere le proprie leggi, e di come le donne, attraverso i secoli, abbiano sempre trovato il modo di riscriverle a modo loro.
Non è un manuale di storia del costume né una rassegna erudita di curiosità . È un'esplorazione che restituisce al corpo della donna la sua natura più autentica: non un'immagine da raggiungere, ma un linguaggio vivo, capace di eccedere ogni canone che ha provato a contenerlo.

Anatomia alchemica e archetipi del potere della donna, è un saggio divulgativo che attraversa il corpo femminile parte per parte, dai capelli al pube, passando per sguardo, bocca, collo, nuca, spalle, schiena, mani, seno, punto vita, ventre, fianchi, gambe e piede, per ricostruire la fitta rete simbolica che ogni civiltà ha proiettato su di esso.
Ogni capitolo intreccia mitologia greca ed egizia, alchimia ermetica, psicologia del profondo, storia dell'arte, storia della moda, antropologia, sociologia dei media e poesia, per mostrare come una stessa parte del corpo possa significare, secondo il contesto storico, sottomissione o potere, pudore o ribellione, sacro o merce. Le dee dell'Olimpo, Afrodite, Artemide, Demetra, Persefone, Atena, Era, diventano archetipi, attraverso cui leggere figure storiche e contemporanee altrettanto diverse tra loro: le suffragette con il rossetto rosso, le dive del cinema italiano, le pin-up della Seconda guerra mondiale, le icone pop di oggi.
Il filo conduttore che lega tutti i capitoli è una tesi precisa: i canoni estetici cambiano, i poteri che li impongono cambiano, ma la femminilità non coincide mai del tutto con nessuno di essi. È sempre eccedente, sempre capace di rinnovarsi oltre l'immagine che ogni epoca ha tentato di fissarle addosso. Il libro si apre con un'introduzione che ne dichiara il metodo e si chiude con una conclusione che ne sintetizza la tesi più ampia: il potere del femminile non sta nella conformità a una forma, ma nella consapevolezza con cui ogni donna decide di abitare il proprio corpo.
