Apparso per la prima volta nel 1911, Fantômas nacque quando l'editore Arthème Fayard incaricò Pierre Souvestre e Marcel Allain di creare una nuova serie che potesse sfruttare l'appetito del pubblico francese per i romanzi polizieschi - Arsène Lupin, Zigomar e Nick Carter erano già personaggi popolari le cui avventure si potevano leggere nei periodici dell'epoca. I due collaboratori adottarono un ingegnoso metodo di produzione letteraria di massa, scrivendo capitoli alterni, così da pubblicare un nuovo seguito ogni mese per diversi anni. Crimini elaborati, congegni tecnologici e violenze raccapriccianti resero la serie un successo presso il grande pubblico: i 32 volumi scritti da Souvestre e Allain vendettero oltre cinque milioni di copie. Ma Fantômas riuscì anche a superare i confini del tipico pubblico della narrativa popolare: figure di spicco dell'avanguardia - Guillaume Apollinaire, André Breton, Max Jacob e René Magritte, tra gli altri - lodarono e resero omaggio a Fantômas in prosa, poesia e pittura, apprezzando la natura surreale e immaginativa dei paradossi impossibili e delle identità cangianti dei romanzi.
