Il Carmide è uno dei dialoghi giovanili di Platone e affronta un tema centrale della filosofia antica: che cos'è la saggezza? Attraverso il consueto metodo dialogico, Socrate mette alla prova diverse definizioni proposte dai suoi interlocutori, mostrando come ciò che sembra chiaro a prima vista si riveli, a un esame più attento, difficile da definire. La saggezza viene così identificata, di volta in volta, con la calma, con il pudore, con il fare il proprio dovere, con la conoscenza di sé e perfino con una scienza della scienza, ma nessuna di queste definizioni risulta pienamente soddisfacente.
Il dialogo conduce il lettore a comprendere che la vera sapienza non può ridursi a una semplice qualità del carattere o a una competenza tecnica, ma riguarda il modo in cui l'uomo orienta tutta la propria vita e il rapporto tra conoscenza e bene. Proprio per questo il Carmide rappresenta una delle tappe più importanti della riflessione platonica sul significato della filosofia e sulla difficoltà di definire ciò che tutti credono di conoscere.
