It Was Not supposed to Be This Way is a transformational grief companion for anyone carrying pain, loss, trauma, or the weight of a life that didn't go the way it was supposed to. Written by Johanna Sutter, a clinical social worker and by hospice chaplain and minister Colby Sutter, who lost his mother, grandmother, and aunt in the span of two years, this book blends lived experience, clinical insight, and soul-level honesty.
Inside these pages, Colby and Johanna teach a radical reframe: Grief is just love with nowhere to go. And love - even in its most painful form - can grow.
Through vulnerable storytelling, practical tools, including many journal prompts and seven weeks of guided exercises and devotionals, you'll learn how to:
- Understand your pain instead of burying it
- Process grief in healthy, intentional ways
- Build rituals that honor your loved one
- Transform trauma into purpose
- Create legacy, meaning, and connection
- Grow through post-traumatic experiences
- Turn your garbage into flowers - beauty born from what once felt unbearable
This book is for anyone grieving a person, a relationship, a dream, or a version of life that no longer exists. It's for those who feel stuck, numb, overwhelmed, or afraid to let the dam break. It's for helpers, supporters, and anyone walking beside someone in pain.
It Was Not Supposed to Be This Way is not a book you read once - it's a companion you return to again and again. It will challenge you, steady you, and remind you that the people you've lost are not behind you... they are in your future, cheering you on from just a few blocks ahead.
If you're ready to turn pain into purpose, grief into growth, and loss into legacy - this book will show you how.
