Investment by Hastings Lyon is a definitive exploration of the fundamental principles and practical applications of financial management. Written during a transformative period in American finance, this work provides a thorough analysis of how capital is deployed across various security types, including stocks, bonds, and mortgages. Lyon meticulously distinguishes between investment and speculation, offering readers a disciplined framework for evaluating risk and return.
The text covers essential topics such as the legal nature of corporate securities, the mechanics of the investment market, and the analytical tools required for sound financial decision-making. Lyon's expertise as both a legal scholar and a finance professor shines through in his clear explanation of complex economic concepts. He emphasizes the importance of diversification and the careful study of financial statements, methods that remain foundational to modern portfolio theory.
As a significant contribution to early twentieth-century economic literature, Investment serves as both an educational resource and a historical record of the investment landscape prior to the Great Depression. It remains an invaluable reference for those seeking to understand the evolution of security analysis and the enduring logic of the financial markets.
