Women and minorities are increasingly entering sectors where white male supremacy is firmly entrenched. They come to occupy spaces that are not vacant or neutral, but are rich with history and purpose.
This ground-breaking book challenges the poisonous, subtle, but nonetheless pervasive belief that some bodies have an inherent right to a given location and others do not.Through the use of case studies from academia, the art world, and the nation state-including Westminster and Whitehall-this book reveals the covert mechanisms that threaten the status of coloured and/or female bodies in environments associated with whiteness and masculinity. How are racist and gendered positions of authority constructed? In a setting where men predominate, how do people navigate their femininity and/or blackness? What does it imply when a location is disturbed and how do areas get normalised or naturalised? This book is the first to address the meaning of diversity in organisations in all of its complexity, providing answers to these and many more concerns. It is.
This book is a welcome addition to the current, broad-ranging discussions on race, gender, and space since it brings together social, cultural, and political theory and engages with a wide range of substantive material from many institutions.
