An Introduction to Yoga by Annie Besant is a comprehensive exploration of the principles and practices of Yoga, delivered through a series of lectures. Besant begins by contextualizing Yoga within the broader framework of the universe's purpose, emphasizing that the universe exists for the unfolding of the Self. She explains that Yoga is a science that accelerates this natural process of self-unfoldment, allowing individuals to consciously apply the laws of consciousness to achieve union with the Self. The lectures delve into the nature of consciousness, describing its various states and the corresponding stages of mind, from the restless to the self-controlled. Besant highlights the importance of understanding the relationship between consciousness and matter, noting that changes in consciousness are linked to vibrations in matter. She distinguishes between different types of Yoga, such as Raja Yoga and Hatha Yoga, and discusses the significance of terms like Samadhi, which refers to a state of deep concentration and union with the Self. The text also addresses the literature of Yoga, including the Upanishads, the Bhagavad-Gita, and the Sutras of Patanjali, while cautioning against the dangers of practicing Yoga without proper guidance. Besant's work serves as both an introduction to the philosophical underpinnings of Yoga and a practical guide for those seeking to embark on the yogic path.
