This is the true story of Somalay Sinai. In 1970s Cambodia, 10-year-old Somalay is separated from her family by the Khmer Rouge. Alone in a world fracturing around her, Somalay herself breaks into two characters who must find their way through the jungle to food and help. Through a miraculous series of events, Somalay is eventually set on the path to finding her lost family. As they reconnect, it is obvious that their experiences have wounded them. This wound is driven deeper when Somalay converts to Christianity and is banished from her newfound family. After wrestling with her identity and a world that seems to make no sense, Somalay forges a new life on her own as a single being and eventually reunites with her family.
