In the course of a project, the specifications precede the technical study, which concludes the preliminary design phase. Several steps are therefore required to arrive at the specifications, as is the case with incremental-iterative design. The aim of a project is to meet a need. This need must be articulated from the outset of the project. It involves clarifying the fundamental requirement that justifies the product's design. The specifications are the document that allows the client's needs to be precisely formalised. In effect, they serve as a roadmap that defines the project and details the conditions under which it must be carried out; they describe all the characteristics expected of the service functions. They form the link of understanding between the company and the client.
