Five mysteries. Five worlds of deception. One Scotland Yard detective who never quite trusts the obvious.
Discover the distinctive detective fiction of Josephine Tey in The Inspector Alan Grant Mysteries, a five-novel collection bringing together some of the most intriguing cases featuring her perceptive Scotland Yard inspector.
Alan Grant is not a detective given to theatrical deductions or easy certainties. He watches people. He questions appearances. And when a convenient explanation fails to match human behavior, he keeps looking.
Across these five classic mysteries, Grant moves from the crowded streets and theatres of London to the lonely English coast, from a controversial accusation that captures public attention to a centuries-old historical mystery-and finally to the haunting landscapes of Scotland.
Five Classic Detective Novels in One VolumeTHE MAN IN THE QUEUE
A man is stabbed while standing among a crowd outside a London theatre. Surrounded by witnesses yet almost completely unknown, the victim leaves Grant with the most basic-and most difficult-question: who was he?
A SHILLING FOR CANDLES
A celebrated actress is found dead on a lonely beach. What first appears to be an accident soon draws Grant into a world of fame, performance, conflicting loyalties, and carefully maintained appearances.
THE FRANCHISE AFFAIR
A disturbing accusation against two women becomes a sensation, exposing the dangerous distance between what can be proved and what the public is prepared to believe.
THE DAUGHTER OF TIME
Confined to a hospital bed, Grant turns his detective's eye toward one of England's most enduring historical controversies: the reputation of Richard III and the mystery of the Princes in the Tower. With no modern crime scene to examine, he must investigate history itself.
THE SINGING SANDS
While travelling north to Scotland, an exhausted Grant encounters the mysterious death of a fellow passenger. A few puzzling words are enough to send him on an investigation through one of Tey's most atmospheric landscapes.
