He was five when he stood in a doorway and something leaned out of a hole in the air and wanted him. He was twenty-eight when the gates finally opened, in the worst stretch of his life, and made it worse for two more years.
Since then he has been inside more than a hundred other lives. A shield-bearer in a wet field, whose whole attention was on the man standing to his left. A girl counting doorways to hold something back. A barber who talked all day, said nothing true, and was perfectly happy. An old woman alone in a house, who noticed him, and was glad of the company. This is the whole account, and it is also something harder.
He is not certain of any of it. He builds the case against himself as hard as he can build it, and does not knock it down.
The third of three volumes. You may read every one of these as fiction and lose nothing.
