Anatoli Ignatov offers a groundbreaking reconceptualization of the relations between law and the natural world drawing on the traditions of African earth custodians, chiefs, and soothsayers in this open access book.

Blending interpretive, postcolonial, and ethnographic methodologies, and drawing on over a decade of extensive field research in Ghana, Ignatov brings Indigenous perspectives, customs, and practices into a conversation otherwise dominated by Western concepts. He examines indigenous concepts such as Earth divinity and challenges Eurocentric traditions in political theory by highlighting nonstatist and more-than-human forms of diplomacy and law in Africa -- forms that colonial governance and postcolonial statehood have sought to erase or domesticate. Through this nuanced reading of African ecological-political thought, Ignatov makes a major contributions to a variety of fields and approaches, both burgeoning and established: among them are Earth jurisprudence, plural diplomacies, development studies, Indigenous studies, new materialism, posthumanism, postcolonial studies, political ecology, and African studies.
