Not illustrated.1855 Excerpt: ... INCIDENTS OF MY LATER YEARS. CHAPTER I. CONFERENCE. The New-York Annual Conference for the year 1826 was held in the Forsyth-street church, N. Y., Bishops M'Kendree, George, Soule, and Hedding, and about one hundred and twenty traveling preachers, were present. During the session, in company with three English gentlemen and their wives, I visited my friends James and Lydia Davidson. We were all from the same favored isle. We all had known the heart of a stranger. We all had our share in the vicissitudes of life, and now we were all permitted to meet and rejoice together. Three of those brethren, including Davidson, are gone to their everlasting home, and have left widows to lament their loss. My friend Davidson had spent several of his early years as a sailor on board a merchantman in the northern seas, during which time he visited Hamburgh, Copenhagen, Memel, and Archangel. But that mode of life did not suit his taste; and on his return, he turned his attention to the study of horticulture and botany. Wars prevailed throughout Europe at that time, and as the English army was constantly wasted by the most sanguinary conflicts, the losses had to be supplied by volunteer companies, local militia, and an army of reserve. In the last-mentioned contingent it was the lot of my friend, Davidson, to serve five years in Ireland, after which he returned to his favorite pursuit, first in Scotland, then in England, and finally in the United States. The last time I saw him he was busy among the flowers in the vicinity of New-York.
