Here is to be found the square about the palace in which the now crestfallen and broken-hearted Napoleon met and bid adieu for all time to the remnant of his beloved generals before his departure, as a prisoner, to the lonely rock, St. Helena. The natural forest to be found in and about Fontainebleau is one, I think, probably unsurpassed in the world. Retracing now my steps I come back to Paris, where I view the sarcophagus, in the magnificently appointed tomb overlooking the Seine, where lies all that is earthly of the man, who, despite his faults, did more for the rehabilitation of Europe--so far as education, Christianization, commercialization, and general advancement is concerned--than any monarch of Europe had, or has done, before or since. His hand or the work of his hand and brain may be seen anywhere about France, so much so that one can not think of France without instinctively thinking of the great Napoleon. I must not take more time about Paris, notwithstanding the fact that there are many things of interest upon which one could write. We leave Paris by train, embark on the English Channel, which for once we find placid, and arrive on English soil, where we take train and are soon on the strand. The day following my arrival in London, I called at the American Embassy with two objects in view, to-wit: To arrange for an audience with our most accomplished and in every way successful ambassador, the Hon. Whitelaw Reid, and to procure tickets ...
