The Imaginary Invalid is a play written by the French playwright, Moliere (real name: Jean Baptiste Poquelin), first performed in 1673. The play is a satire on the medical profession and the hypochondriacs who were common in Moliere's time. The main character, Argan, is a wealthy man who is obsessed with his health and constantly seeks the advice of doctors. He is convinced that he is seriously ill and must marry his daughter off to a doctor in order to have constant medical attention. However, his daughter is in love with someone else and is determined to marry for love. The play is a comedy filled with mistaken identities, farcical situations, and exaggerated characters. It is also a commentary on the dangers of self-diagnosis and the importance of seeking qualified medical advice. The play is considered one of Moliere's best works and is still performed today.MR.
