Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) is an opera in two acts by Gioachino Rossini to an Italian libretto by Cesare Sterbini. The libretto was based on Pierre Beaumarchais's comedy Le Barbier de Séville (1775). The opera tells the story of Count Almaviva, who enlists the help of the barber Figaro to win the hand of the beautiful Rosina. Rosina is currently the ward of the elderly Dr. Bartolo, who intends to marry her himself. Through Figaro's clever schemes and disguises, Almaviva manages to court Rosina and, in the end, they elope, much to the chagrin of Dr. Bartolo.
First performed in 1816, Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia remains one of the most popular and frequently performed operas of all time, celebrated for its memorable melodies, brilliant wit, and farcical situations. Its enduring appeal lies in its masterful blend of comedy and musical genius, making it a cornerstone of the operatic repertoire.
