Ifa Nlá - the Great Ifa - is not a different system. It is Ifa at its fullest expression: the sacred divination tradition operating at the level of its highest principles, its deepest cosmological function, and its most complete form of transmission.
Most practitioners work with Ifa as a practical system - for divination, for guidance, for ebo, for initiation. Far fewer encounter what the tradition says about itself when viewed from its own summit: what Ifa is as a complete sacred science, what it is meant to accomplish for humanity, and why Orunmila chose to remain on earth rather than return to heaven.
This book teaches Ifa Nlá.
Babalawo Olodu Ifadahunsi Egundiran Obafemi Alladahanou, Akoda Awo of UNIOV, draws on the most elevated teachings of the Odu corpus and on oral transmissions from senior priests in Nigeria and the diaspora to present the inner principles of Ifa as a supreme sacred system.
What this book contains:
The meaning of Ifa Nlá - how the tradition understands its own highest expression, and what distinguishes ordinary Ifa practice from Ifa operating at its full capacity.
Orunmila and the decision to remain - the story from the Odu of why the Witness of Destiny chose to stay on earth among human beings, and what obligation that creates for every Babalawo.
The three levels of Ifa teaching - exoteric, esoteric, and the inner court of Ifa - and what advances a practitioner from one level to the next.
The cosmological function of Ifa - not just as a divination system but as the mechanism by which Olodumare maintains order in the universe.
Sacred verses on Ifa Nlá - Ese Ifa with Yoruba originals and English translations.
The qualities of the Babalawo who carries Ifa Nlá - the ethical and spiritual requirements for the priest who aspires to the highest expression of the tradition.
For Babalawos, Awo initiates, Iyanifas, and serious students who want to move beyond the mechanics of practice and understand what the tradition is ultimately for.
