Eleven-year-old Alvin Reyes is handed a laptop on his first day of sixth grade and told there are no more textbooks. Nobody in the gymnasium that night - not his mother, not the parents around her, not even the district - understands yet what they've just agreed to.
Over the next decade, Alvin watches his classmates get faster, more confident, and steadily less able to think without help. A homework robot named Milo follows him through high school. A placement exam quietly sorts his closest friends out of the futures they were promised. And a six-page memo, buried in an improperly configured folder, finally reveals what he suspected all along: none of this happened by accident.
A less independently capable electorate is, on balance, a more governable one.
The Idiocracy Protocol is a slow-building dystopian novel about the machinery of ordinary complicity - the vendor incentives, the softened grading rubrics, the banned books, the AI systems too opaque for anyone to audit - and the one boy who refuses, quietly and at real cost, to stop noticing. Grounded in real classroom AI adoption and written with restraint rather than spectacle, it asks a question: once a population stops being able to think for itself, where do you even begin?
A novel about what gets lost when convenience becomes the only form of control anyone needs.
