For more than a thousand years, medicine followed the authority of Galen, the ancient physician whose vision of the body shaped hospitals, universities, and medical textbooks across civilizations. According to Galenic physiology, blood passed from the right side of the heart to the left through invisible pores in the wall between the ventricles.
But in the thirteenth century, a brilliant physician from the Islamic world looked at that wall and said no.
Ibn al-Nafis rejected one of the most durable errors in medical history.
Born near Damascus and later associated with the great medical institutions of Cairo, Ibn al-Nafis became one of the most remarkable physicians of the medieval world. Working within the tradition of Galen and Avicenna, he did not merely preserve ancient medicine. He corrected it.
In his anatomical commentary on Avicenna's Canon of Medicine, Ibn al-Nafis argued that blood could not pass through the thick wall of the heart's septum. Instead, it had to travel from the right side of the heart to the lungs, mix with air, and return to the left side of the heart through the pulmonary vein.
Centuries before William Harvey demonstrated the full circulation of blood, and before Renaissance figures such as Michael Servetus and Realdo Colombo described pulmonary transit in Europe, Ibn al-Nafis had already identified the blood's hidden road through the lungs.
Ibn al-Nafis and the Secret Circulation of the Blood tells the story of this extraordinary discovery and the world that made it possible.

Greek medicine entered the Islamic world. Islamic physicians studied, preserved, criticized, and transformed it. Centuries later, European anatomy would challenge Galen again. But hidden in the manuscript tradition was an earlier correction: a physician who saw that the heart's wall would not open and that blood had to pass through the lungs.
The Renaissance did not emerge from nowhere.
Its roots reached through Baghdad, Damascus, Cairo, Cordoba, Toledo, Sicily, and the manuscript libraries of the medieval world. Ibn al-Nafis stands as one of the great forgotten figures in that larger story: a physician, jurist, thinker, and skeptic who trusted anatomy over authority.
Carefully written and historically balanced, this book does not overclaim what cannot be proven. Whether Ibn al-Nafis's pulmonary discovery directly influenced Renaissance physicians remains uncertain. But the central fact is powerful enough: centuries before the standard European story of circulation, Ibn al-Nafis had already described the blood's passage through the lungs.
This is the story of the physician who listened to the heart when history forgot his name.
