The year is 1965. The State Fair of Texas opens in a little over a month. The second Monday in October is Negro Achievement Day. That's the day colored folks get to attend the fair without having to be worried about any problems from white people. Rene Thompson is ten years old; she has been waiting for this day all year. The only problem is convincing her parents that it is safe to drive to Dallas in spite of all the tension in the country. There have been riots in Los Angeles, and picketing and boycotts in Alabama. It doesn't help that the neighbors and the nosey church folks keep filling her parent's minds with doubts about the fair. Will Rene get to attend the fair? Will she have to deal with the harsh reality of being colored in the south during the civil rights movement.
