I Am Not a Saint: Prince Hall, Black Institutions, Faith, and the Fight for Truth is a fearless, historically grounded meditation on Black leadership, faith, masculinity, institutional decline, and the unfinished work of legacy. Using Prince Hall as both historical anchor and moral mirror, LOUIS DWAYNE PILLOW examines the rise of Black self-built institutions-churches, lodges, schools, businesses, and mutual aid networks-and confronts the internal fractures that now threaten them: ego, colorism, class division, performative brotherhood, anti-intellectualism, and spiritual dishonesty. Blending history, philosophy, theology, social critique, and poetic urgency, the book engages voices such as Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Du Bois, James Cone, Howard Thurman, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Albert Camus, and Friedrich Nietzsche to ask difficult questions about God, power, responsibility, and what remains when titles fade and applause disappears.
Part indictment, part love letter, and part blueprint for institutional rebirth, this book challenges readers to move beyond performance and build something worthy of survival. It is written for Black readers, faith communities, fraternal spaces, leaders, and anyone courageous enough to confront uncomfortable truths in pursuit of something more honest, durable, and free.
