In 1991, at age 19, I set out hitchhiking from California, into Mexico, through Central America, and finally ran out of money in Colombia. For nearly a year and a half, I hid from Nicaraguan Guerillas, rode on top of trucks, was held up with guns and knives, attacked by a whore house, and narrowly escaped being poisoned by Moroccans.
