Groups, rings, and fields set out with rare clarity for the student meeting modern algebra for the first time, in a compact teaching text of 1949.

Marie J. Weiss (1903-1952) was the first woman to take a doctorate in mathematics at Stanford University, a specialist in substitution groups, and for many years a professor at Newcomb College, Tulane. Higher Algebra for the Undergraduate was published by John Wiley and Sons in 1949 and came straight out of her own lecture room. It opens with the rational, real, and complex numbers, moves into the elementary theory of groups, and goes on to rings, integral domains, and fields, closing with matrices over a field, determinants, and ideals.
