Meet Seth Cawdale. On the surface an ordinary man, with an ordinary life and ordinary aspirations. A good job and a happy marriage with well balanced kids. Essentially a comfortable middle aged man, enjoying the trappings of a very middle-class life.

Except... there's a dark episode from Seth's past. A respectful persona takes years to build, but that one blemish, that stain, from a distant decade can never be eradicated. An event, a moment of madness, lays only in abeyance.

But was it murder? Was it, Seth? Six friends' lunchtime drinks turn into an all-day event. The next morning no-one remembers much. All they know is Sam Tait is missing. Fast forward a few weeks and a body is found. The police have their suspects, but they make mistakes and at the time the killer is never found.

Forty years later has time finally caught up with the murderer? A contrived ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of Sam's death, brings the old school friendship group back together. It's awkward, its uncomfortable, no-body wants to be there.

It triggers a frenzy of activity, resulting in the emergence of new evidence and the police reopening of the case. The new investigation comes under the watchful eye of DI Jenny Malone. She's meticulous, but has she covered every angle and cleared up all those loose ends.

A number of suspects are in the frame and each have a motive, but there is only one for whom the police have DNA evidence. The suspects are a motley crew each with their own secrets, that they don't want to reveal, plus personal agendas shaped by their personalities and disparate paths in life.

As the plot unfolds an element of doubt creeps in. The answers might be more complicated than they appear on the surface. Someone holds a hidden guilt for a hideous murder in the bleak snow covered parkland of Rodden Meadows, back in January 1983... but will they ever be caught?

The novel views the world through various lens, including the flaws in the legal and jury system, the desperation and hopelessness associated with life in prison and how personalities may evolve over time, but never fundamentally change.

If you enjoy a crime novel where the plot has many twists and turns, but that is believable and makes you want to read on, then this is the novel for you. Get to know the main characters and immerse yourself in their complex personalities. I hope you enjoy!
