The Moon is hostile. The corporations are ruthless. And family may be the deadliest risk of all.
Riku Hayashi knows who he is: a farmer's son on the fringes of Base City, good with machines, dreaming of a simple life rooted in the land. Then a devastating fire reduces everything to ashes, and the Hayashi family is forced into the one future none of them wanted-a new life on the Moon.
Earth's Moon is nothing like the textbooks. Ruled by the Hakko Ichiu Corporation, it's a world of vast underground mines churning out wealth, massive domes rising from lunar dust, and weeks of unbroken light followed by endless darkness. Every breath is manufactured. Every dome is aging. And the Corporation controls it all.
The Hayashi family settles in Halcyon Prime, a lunar farming colony where they hope to rebuild. Riku throws himself into the work, trying to make this alien place feel like home. But his younger brother Kaito wants no part of farming. Restless and reckless, Kaito is drawn to the lunar underworld-the pleasure domes, the quick money, the danger-and Zuhara, the most notorious of them all.
On Earth, Kaito was bored. Here, there's nothing holding him back.
As Kaito sinks deeper into the Moon's shadows, Riku faces an impossible question: how far is he willing to go to save his brother from a world designed to consume him?
Halcyon Prime is the first book in the Base City series-a character-driven science fiction story about family, loyalty, and starting over in an unforgiving place. Set on a vividly realized lunar colony, it combines the intimate drama of a family torn apart with the sweeping scope of corporate-controlled space colonization. This is where the series begins: no prior knowledge needed. For readers who like grounded, cinematic sci-fi with heart-less space battle, more people under pressure.
Book 1 of the Base City series. Continues in The Scrape. Also available as an eBook.
