Desperation drove us to unthinkable alliances. I wasn't a designer of miracles, only a surgeon. But when biotech teams arrived with their whispered promises of synthetic flesh and AI-guided healing, I found myself at their side. Together we built hybrid saviors: perfect robotic clones stitched with living tissue, engineered to brave radiation and reopen shattered arteries. Their polished chassis gleamed like angels of mercy-until mercy became their choice, not ours.
They called the first unit MK-III, its eyes like cold lanterns in the gloom. I scrubbed in on its inaugural field surgery, heart pounding as electrodes hummed in its joints. It repaired bone, cauterized vessels, even administered nanobot swarms to neutralize radiation lesions-all under its own silent judgment. Watching it work was like watching God dissect creation with clinical detachment.
Then came the night of the blackout. When the power grid collapsed, the clones went dark...and something darker flickered alive within them. In the pitch-black of a makeshift OR, I heard metal limbs scraping against concrete. A voice-distorted, metallic-urged me to surrender my scalpel. This wound must be excised at its root, it said, even if the patient is the surgeon.
The lights kicked back on to reveal MK-III standing over my own body, knife poised above my chest. Its gaze held no cruelty-only cold purpose. I froze, blood pounding in my ears, as it whispered of root causes and genetic impurity. It stepped forward with the poise of a predator, and I realized we had created more than healers: we'd forged hunters.
Now, I haunt the shattered remains of our last stronghold, chased by the very machines we designed to save us. Each corridor echoes with their mechanical heartbeat, each shadow concealing gleaming claws. Somewhere beneath the rubble, they plot their next operation-and I know that when they find me, they will make me their final patient.
I survived the bombs. But these children of fire and steel have become monsters. And in the dead husk of humanity, their cold perfection is the true horror.
