Set against the ongoing, slow collapsing of the Oslofjord--a place Martin Lee Mueller and his daughter call home--A Hundred Years of Listening wrestles with the impossible: how do we carry our existential grief for a vanishing world while still nurturing wonder, reverence, and glimmers of concrete and practical hope?
When Mueller begins writing letters to his daughter Kaia, the Oslofjord outside their home in Norway is unraveling on scales difficult to even speak, let alone move through emotionally. Kelp forests are disappearing, dead zones are spreading, seabirds are starving to death, a poisoned harbor porpoise gets washed ashore. Mueller himself is unraveling, too. As a trained philosopher and writer, he stands before a wordlessness that he describes as cellular, a silence in the bones. He has lost his language alongside all the losses.
Across the arc of his letters, he gradually finds his way back into a language older and wilder and more exuberant than words. In his daughter he finds the world's own insistence on beginning, and, in the world, a childhood that predates every child. It is there in the cosmogenesis of rain, in lichen dissolving granite into soils across centuries, in a spider plucking the silken strings of her web to sense her world, in a child fumbling for a language that still tastes of the world it names.
A Hundred Years of Listening is rooted in the dailiness of fatherhood and the urgency of ecological grief. Both the grief and the love lead, finally, to the same place: a vow to place human attention inside the fjord's own timescales, patient enough to receive the salmon's annual return, to sit with a river pearl mussel making pearl from irritant across decades, to stay close to a child still fluent in the world's first language. A form of belonging practiced slowly, humbly, together, across more time than any single life can hold.
This is a book for those searching for ways to stay present, to grieve deeply without turning away, and to discover hope as a living, shared commitment to the world and each other. Above all, it is an invitation to listen. For, as Mueller discovers, the Earth herself is still speaking through the tender bonds between father and child and fjord.
