Nicole, recovering from hip surgery and managing her pain with Oxycodone, becomes entranced by a vibrant hummingbird, which her husband Gianni identifies as a Calyote anna. As she reminisces about their enduring love, a stream of visitors disrupts her healing. Nurse Lara, radiating beauty, flirts with Gianni and aggravates Nicole by attempting to photograph her incision without consent, prompting Nicole to seek additional pain relief. Her best friend Aimee calls with distressing news about her worsening rheumatoid arthritis and shares a powerful story of a hummingbird courageously battling a forest fire, symbolizing resilience. The compassionate physical therapist Elizabeth earns Nicole's trust and suggests the hummingbird may be a spiritual messenger, sparking her imagination. Meanwhile, quasi-adopted son Alexei humorously hints at being family and jokingly proposes that the hummingbird is spying on them. Intrusive neighbor Nancy bursts in with a cake unsettling Nicole with her overpowering presence. As Nicole's mobility improves, she becomes increasingly worried for Aimee upon learning of her cancer diagnosis, which she tenderly names Cosima to diminish its fearsome reality.
