Humanity and Chance is a Sci-fi, contemporary, feminine, romantic comedy, dystopian, and utopian novel presenting the effect of individuals within society. The storyline alternates the challenges of two black female characters, Humanity Howard and Chance Howard. These two characters interact remotely in the context of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, from antipathy and indifference to sympathy to finally learning (chapter 10) that they have blood relations. This is the starting point of their symbiotic relationship.
Although they look like 22-year-old twin sisters, Humanity is older than Chance and is her grandmother. Humanity gave birth to Chance Humanity Howard at Mount Sinai Hospital on June 13, 1960, and finding that the baby was not her husband John Howard's biological daughter, she went into a coma. She comes out of the coma on August 19, 2024, to face her distressing past, the feeling of loss, and the origin of her afflictions.
Chance Howard isolates herself after the death of her mother, Chance Humanity Howard. However, she befriends Max, a dog who can speak thanks to an artificial intelligence device connected to his prefrontal cortex, which will cause the mad dog disease and the carnage of thousands of dogs and humans in New York. Carrying the burden of her deceased mother's tragic romantic history, she procrastinates but ultimately falls in love with Bob Denver and consequently faces racism.
The reunion of Humanity and Chance takes place in a dystopian world. There is an earthquake, intense atmospheric heat, a water shortage, cases of mental illness, societal uncertainty, scientific experiments causing the diseases of mad dogs and humans, and the appearance of beings with short lifespans. Humanity bids her new husband and friends the Deep Hollow Ranch as a heavenly place of escape, which nevertheless turns out to be utopian.
Chance moves from introverted to warlike behavior, while Humanity consolidates from impulsive to reformative behavior. Both characters want to avoid imposing redemption on someone by force. Instead, they will use storytelling to raise awareness that redemption is an individual's choice.
