Human Factors in Aviation: Cognitive Distortions examines how ordinary processes of attention, interpretation, categorization, memory, and judgment can quietly mislead even knowledgeable, conscientious, and experienced professionals. The book moves beyond the idea that cognitive bias is a problem confined to careless people. Instead, it shows how normal human cognition interacts with uncertainty, workload, emotion, hierarchy, technology, prior experience, incomplete information, and organizational expectations.
Through a carefully developed progression, the book explains how a complex situation can collapse into an either-or judgment, how one event can become a general rule, how behavior can become identity, and how a legitimate standard can harden into an absolute demand. It then moves upstream to examine how mental filtering, anchoring, confirmation bias, discounting of contrary evidence, and myside reasoning influence what becomes visible, credible, and decisive.
This is not simply a catalog of named biases. It is a practical framework for improving professional judgment. Readers learn how to distinguish observation from interpretation, define the question before gathering evidence, identify hidden assumptions, develop competing explanations, preserve anomalies, separate independent evidence from repeated accounts, calibrate confidence, and document what would cause a conclusion to change. The goal is not endless doubt. It is disciplined thought that supports timely action while preserving the ability to recognize and correct an inadequate understanding.
