In 1963 Bedford County, Virginia, Annie is grieving the tragic loss of her husband. She has lived for him her entire life, and must find her own sense of purpose.

Newly widowed, she is aided by her vivacious, out-going, socially inappropriate friend Flotilla, and her new friend Charles Lee White, who provides support, as Annie slowly finds out her husband was not who he presented himself to be, and she has many other things in her life to grieve.

Annie works through her grief, while on the surface she struggles to learn to make a proper mint julep. With each attempt representative of a different stage of grief, she works through shock, anger, sadness, guilt, and finally acceptance, as she is finally presented with a proper mint julep.
