Not a goodwill gesture. Not if you complain loudly enough. A regulated obligation, in a fixed amount, that exists whether or not you ever find out.
The same is true when your water goes off. When a sewer floods your ground floor. When the broadband dies for a week. When an engineer takes your morning off work and never turns up.
Almost nobody in Britain claims any of it. Not because they are careless, but because the payment comes from a company that does not bill them, has no account for them, and often has no way to send them money.
And it gets worse. If you have already looked this up, you were probably told the wrong number.
Water compensation rose on 2 July 2025. The government called it the first uplift in 25 years and an increase of up to tenfold. So every article, forum post and advice page written before that date now understates what you are owed, often by half.
An internal sewer flooding minimum that was 150 is now 300. Low pressure that was 25 is now up to 250 a year. If you settled for the old figure, you were short-changed with your own consent.

You think a storm is nobody's fault, so nobody's liability. The rules disagree. Severe weather steps every 6 hours to a cap of 2,165, against 390 in normal weather. The longest outage you remember is the most valuable claim you never made.
That cheaper tariff quietly cost you the Priority Services Register. Ofgem says you must ask to join the new supplier's register when you switch. Nothing announces it. Every household that moved for a better price and was previously registered is now, silently, not, and will find out during the next outage.
