In this fictional tale set in Salt Lake City, young Gideon Ludlow, animal control officer by day and law student at night, responds to a call about a barking, possibly abandoned dog, and discovers evidence of the abduction of a recently retired doctor. Unknown to him and the attractive, young female police officer who first responds, the doctor had helped a terminally ill woman die. Aspiring to become a detective, the young police officer, Märta Engström, soon persuades her superiors to allow her to assist the abduction investigation during her off-duty time. She quickly enlists Gideon's help. In a pivotal turn of events, the doctor's dog plays a key role in the investigation.
Weaved into the story of the amateur sleuths' struggle to solve the crime and to locate the missing doctor, are arguments for and against physician-assisted suicide; a brief look into the Latter-day Saints (Mormon) religion; and the tale of the burgeoning romance between Märta and Gideon.
