When Maggie Kroll returns to rural Wisconsin to clean out the farmhouse she inherited from her mother, the plan is simple: empty the house, survive a long weekend with four old friends, and hand the keys to the new owners.
Then they find the door beneath the basement stairs.

And a warning nobody bothered to explain.
Beyond the farmhouse lies the forgotten settlement of Hollow Creek, a place that vanished from county maps after seventy-three residents disappeared on Halloween night more than a century ago.
Soon buried bells are ringing beneath the ground. Roads are appearing where no roads should exist. A red fox with a torn ear keeps turning up at exactly the wrong-or right-moment. And something in the woods has learned how to imitate the voices and faces of the people Maggie loves.
Fortunately, Maggie isn't facing it alone.
There is Jenny, whose practical questions tend to arrive during extremely impractical emergencies; Tom, Maggie's brother, who remains convinced most problems can be solved with tools; Dean, a former volunteer firefighter whose sarcasm gets considerably worse when frightened; and Eli, a quiet photographer who keeps noticing things everyone else wishes he hadn't.
Then there are Pickles, Maggie's overweight orange cat, and Roscoe, Dean's nervous mutt.
The humans may be fooled.
The animals are harder to convince.
As Halloween approaches, Hollow Creek begins finding its way back into the modern world, and Maggie discovers that her family's connection to the vanished settlement reaches much deeper than the farmhouse.
To stop what happened in 1891 from happening again, five friends will have to follow impossible roads, uncover what Maggie's parents spent decades hiding, and face something that can borrow almost any familiar face.
Because Hollow Creek hasn't been empty all these years.
It's been waiting.
