What follows is a race through the highlands of central Vietnam: a rescue operation assembled from a former operative working out of a burger restaurant, a woman who drives up from Saigon with hard cases in the trunk, and a Soviet-era helicopter sitting on a pad in a French-era compound deep in the jungle.
But The Hoi An Crossing is more than a thriller. It's the story of a man from Chickasaw County, Mississippi, who spent fifty-seven years carrying something he fired from a gun on a Huey over the paddies -- and who finally, in the country where he left it, begins to find a way home.
