The limits we haye prescribed to ourselves in this work, confine us solely to the discoveries made in the North; notwithstanding which, we found it necessary to connect the thread cf our narration by the above introduction j and shall only observe, in addition to what we have just stated, that the attempts made to arrive at the Indies by a new and shorter route, have given rife to many voyages in the North. But many of those voyages of discovery have also originated in other causes, which we shall take occasion gradually to unfold one after the other. It will be necessary, however, for the sake of order, in treating of these discoveries, to arrange them under the heads of the different nations which have participated in them; we shall therefore here give a brief account of the Discoveries made by the English, Dutch, French, Danes, Russians, Spaniards, and Portuguese; and conclude the whole with some general physical, zoological botanical, mineralogical, and anthropological Observations, and with a few words concerning the probability there is of getting through the Northern Seas into the great Pacific Ocean.
